Koronadal still an investment haven

KORONADAL CITY -- Despite the previous peace and order problems here, foreign and domestic investors are still high on the city's trade and investment potentials due to its "business-friendly" environment.

Mayor Fernando Miguel said the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), which has adjudged Koronadal as this year's most business-friendly city or local government unit (LGU) in Mindanao, made this assessment recently.

"This essentially reflects our capability to institute positive or good governance and sound business policies and programs," said Miguel citing a letter from former PCCI president and 31st Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) awards committee chair Miguel Varela.

The PBC&E is an annual event organized by PCCI, the country's biggest business organization.

According to the PBC&E website, the most business-friendly LGU award is primarily based on its slogan "What's Good for the Citizenry is Good for Business," which represents a framework for achieving a continuous improvement of LGU services to their areas, benefiting both the business community and citizenry.

Miguel credited the city's investment code, established and efficient system of business registration and renewal of business licenses and the local government's continuing programs to promote entrepreneurship in garnering the award.

Miguel had also cited tax incentives and amnesty programs being offered by the City Government for pioneering business ventures and expansion activities.

"The years of hard work, patience and determination to carve the niche of our city in the country's investment map is now paying off," Miguel said.

According to Miguel residents could again stand proud for such achievement, which he cited as a fitting follow up to the selection of the city two years ago as then the country's most competitive city in small cities category by the Asian Institute of Management.

The city, which celebrated its fifth charter anniversary last October 8, is the regional administrative center of Region 12 or Soccsksargen Region.

Soccsksargen covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Kidapawan, Tacurong and Cotabato. (Allen V. Estabillo)
