Palace approves coastal road
MALACANANG has approved the construction of the 40-kilometer coastal road that would connect the coastal towns of Glan, Sarangani, and Jose Abad Santos in Davao del Sur.
Secretary Jesus Dureza, chair of the Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco), said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo personally endorsed the project that was primarily intended to further build up an economic cooperation forged by three key coastal municipalities in the area.
"This is already approved by the President so we expect the ground works to begin soon," Dureza said during his regular radio program "Kalinaw Para sa Mindanao" aired over the Radio Mindanao Network on Monday night.
Dureza said the President has tapped the departments of agriculture and land reform to facilitate the road's construction.
According to Dureza, Arroyo also instructed Armed Forces of the Philippines Southern Command chief Lieutenant General Edilberto Adan to mobilize its engineering brigade for the project.
Dureza said the construction of the road would help facilitate movement of various products and traders from the two towns and the neighboring areas.
At present, the two towns can only be accessible through motorcycles due to the undeveloped roads.
"This would be an all-weather road but there are plans for its improvement in the future, specifically to make it a concrete highway," Dureza said.
The Regional Development Council of Region 12 or Soccsksargen Region and the Jose Abad Santos-Glan-Sarangani Cooperation Triangle or JAGS-CT earlier proposed the road project.
The cooperation triangle that was formally launched to years ago was established to develop the area as an alternative economic and trading hub in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area.
Medco cited that the municipalities belonging to the growth triangle are the nearest areas to Indonesia, with Sarangani just a four-hour ride away to Marori Island in Indonesia by seacraft. (Allen V. Estabillo)
