Residents lauded for rescuing eagle
By Aquiles Zonio

OFFICIALS from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) hailed local residents of Sitio Basak, Polunoling in Tupi town, South Cotabato for taking good care of the captured Philippine Eagle.

Bong Dañoso and Ali Jao captured the ailing Philippine Eagle six days ago.

On Wednesday morning, DENR and Pef official came to the area to retrieve the bird, which was baptized Princess Waling-Waling by her rescuers.

Dañoso and Jao were more than glad to turn over the Philippine Eagle to Jim Sampulna, DENR 12 regional director, and Domingo Tadena, deputy director for conservation and breeding program of PEF.

The PEF official said he was so glad local residents took care of the eagle instead of slaughtering it.

Tadena estimated that the eagle, weighing about 5 kilos with a wingspan of two meters, is just about four to five years old.

Sampulna said the eagle either came from forested area of Mt. Parker in T'boli or in Mt. Matutum in Polomolok.

The DENR official claimed that the presence of Philippine Eagle is an indication that environment, particularly forest in the area is improving.
