Mining village placed under close watch By Aquiles Zonio
KORONADAL CITY -- The provincial police command here has ordered strict monitoring of explosives as well as mining operations in gold-rich Kematu Village in T'boli town, South Cotabato following the seizure on Thursday of a cache of blasting caps from a mine worker.
Senior Superintendent Getulio Napeñas, South Cotabato provincial police chief, issued the order Friday to the town police chief of T'boli.
Napeñas said the order was in response to reports that small-scale miners operating in Kematu were keeping explosives for future use.
Joint elements of the 1205th Provincial Police Mobile Group and the Army's 57th Infantry Battalion seized 275 "commercial blasting caps" from a certain Ernesto Rico, 55, laborer of Gold Mine Tunnel in Kematu.
Rico was on his way to the mining area when he was intercepted by the law enforcers in Sitio Tunnel, also part of Kematu, around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The police official said Rico is now being detained at the police provincial command while awaiting for the filing of appropriate charges against him.
Napeñas further said he also directed the T'boli police to strictly monitor the activities of small-scale miners in Kematu and take appropriate action in case it is found they are using explosives in their operation.
