Rebels step up attacks By Aquiles Zonio
THE National Democratic Front (NDF) in Mindanao claimed that its armed wing new People's Army (NPA) had killed 28 military and paramilitary members in 41 tactical offensives launched against the government forces in a span of five weeks in various parts of Mindanao.
In an email sent to Sun.Star, NDF-Mindanao spokesman Jorge Madlos, alias Ka Oris, said the coordinated attacks were part of the CPP-NPA-NDF efforts to help anti-Arroyo forces oust the present regime.
Madlos added that during the NPA offensives launched in various parts of Mindanao, the communist-led rebel forces seized 23 high-powered firearms and three handguns.
According to him, only two NPA fighters were killed and seven others were wounded and that a paramilitary member who was captured in the course of the attacks was released unharmed.
The NDF spokesman in Mindanao further bared that last October 30, two military trucks were damaged when NPA fighters detonated a landmine along the road in Sitio Sian, Barangay Maharlika in Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur.
He said the first military vehicle was totally wrecked while the other one was partially damaged.
In the ensuing armed confrontation, two government soldiers were killed while four others were injured.
Wounded soldiers were identified as Senior Sergeant Jacob Japon, Corporal Rosito Salinas, Private first class Marvin Jumawan and Saturnino Canada.
The incident took place just two kilometers away from the military detachment in Scaling Station, PICOP, Bislig City.
Last October 28, the same NPA unit attacked a military outpost in sitio Tandawan, Bigaan, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
Madlos said the rebels overran the camp and recovered three M14 and two Garand rifles and assorted ammunitions.
