PSC trains Sarangani coaches
ALABEL, Sarangani -- The Philippine Sports Commission recently brought its top trainers to Sarangani to teach local coaches produce better-trained athletes, officials said.
"Trainers who have distinguished themselves as athletes as well as sports analyst" were training their local counterparts under the commission's TOP-START, said PSC Commissioner Leon Montemayor last week.
TOP-START (Trainers' and Officials' Program-Scientific Training for Athletes) was introduced in Sarangani during the coaches' technical and sports management seminar on November 3-5.
"The training of coaches of this province under TOP-START is one of the sports highlights in PSC Mindanao," Montemayor said.
"We give priority and importance to the training of local coaches as PSC's response to Mindanao to upgrade the education of our coaches and sports leaders," he added.
Lydia de Vega-Mercado, Asia's fastest woman and undisputed sports icon in Asia for more than two decades, told participants she started competing at 12 years old. She told athletes to "always aim high."
"Lagi nyong isipin ang pinakamataas na posisyon. Don't aim for bronze or silver. Aim to be number one," Mercado said.
Governor Miguel Dominguez said his administration was investing in sports development to raise the competitive spirit in children.
"If you're not competitive in this world, pag hindi si Lydia de Vega nagsumikap sa track and field, she would not have become a gold medalist, she would not have become a trainer para iparating sa inyo ang meaning of competitiveness," the governor said.
The seminar trainers were headed by Manuelito Tacay, PSC executive assistant and project manager of TOP-START. Trainer for athletics was Renato Unso, a South East Asian Games (SEAG) record-holder in hurdles; SEAG veteran Richard Luna for swimming; and another SEAG veteran, Rico Ramirez for gymnastics.
