Bird flu awareness drive gets backing from LGUs
By Cathy Apelacio

THE National Government's drive against bird flu has gained support from local chief executives of Sarangani and General Santos City who have mapped out their respective bird flu awareness campaign.

A one-day orientation seminar on bird flu was held last week as part of the massive awareness drive of the City Government of General Santos with key employees and barangay officials as participants.

Both local government units have also directed their respective Disaster and Coordinating Councils-Technical Working Groups to review their disaster preparedness plans to determine their readiness to address the potential menace of the Asian avian influenza.

The National Government said that while it cannot prevent migratory birds from coming into the country's territory, the public has nothing to panic because the government is doing everything to battle the disease.

Malacañang said the government knows the "severity of the threat" and it is doing everything to keep the country bird flu-free.

The government is intensifying its information drive on H5N1 strain of bird flu in the wake of increasing fatalities in neighboring countries in Asia.

The avian flu resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of birds while leaving scores of people dead in Vietnam and Thailand. (Press release)
