Rebel-infested Sarangani village gets P10-M By Cathy Apelacio
MALAPATAN, Sarangani -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would give P10 million to rehabilitate the road network in Barangay Kinam, a place of at least 216 New Peoples Army (NPA) militia who surrendered Saturday to the military.
The amount, Governor Miguel Dominguez said, "might be small but good enough to jumpstart the infrastructure development in the area.
Dominguez said he lobbied the P10 million-fund during a meeting with the President.
To reach Kinam, approximately 24 kilometers from the highway, one has to traverse a river 30 times. It is composed of 44 hamlets (sitios) with a population of over 3,000 predominantly B'laan tribe.
Municipal social welfare and development officer Marilyn Vinzonan revealed that the area is agriculturally productive only that it is "hard to reach and infested with lawless elements like the NPA and other bandit groups."
The governor, however, prodded the residents of Kinam particularly the returnees to regain the trust of the government first by proving their sincerity in returning to the fold of law.
"If you can prove your sincerity to the government you are assured that it will not only be just infrastructure support that the government will be able to provide in Kinam but other aspects of development as well," said Dominguez. (Press release)
