Local firm now exporting mangosteen to US
KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Exporting mangosteen and its processed products to the US has become one of the bright prospects of the export sector of this province.
Dr. Alfredo Villarico, owner of Nutri-Prime Farms here, said that processed mangosteen has bright prospects in the American market owing to its health benefits.
"We started exporting to the United States about three months ago," said Villarico.
Nutri-Prime, a major producer of mangosteen in the locality, penetrated the American market after participating in a trade expo in Los Angeles, California in late August.
It is now exporting mangosteen jam, tea, and powdered capsule.
A partner company based in the US, he said, is marketing their products.
Villarico said he ventured into processing because prices of mangosteen usually fall during peak harvest season.
Presently, Nutri-Prime's processed mangosteen products are not available locally to meet the demand of the markets in the US.
Instead, Villarico said they are also disposing fresh mangosteen to the local market.
Anthony Bravo, provincial director of the Department of Trade and Industry, said the agency is continuously helping Nutri-Prime develop its products for other international markets.
"Mangosteen is gaining wide acceptance not only in its fresh form but especially in its processed form," Bravo said. (RBS)
