City forms anti-bird flu body By Aquiles Zonio
THE City Government here has set up Avian Influenza Task Force in response to the threat posed by the dreaded bird flu virus.
Earlier, the Bureau of Animal Industry under the Department of Agriculture, in coordination with the local government, conducted an Avian Influenza Protection Training Workshop, which was attended by local officials and employees.
Under the task force, a rapid action team was created composed of Dr. Ephraim Marin of the city veterinary office, Dr. Jennifer Bulawan of the DA satellite laboratory, and Dr. Castro Leo Ejercito of the Veterinary Quarantine Service.
Other sub-bodies formed under the avian influenza task force were surveillance team led by Dr. Emilio Gargaran, Quarantine team headed by Ejercito, information and education campaign team led by Jose Aponesto of the city public information office and census team led Dr. Bernard Bulawan of the city veterinary office.
Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. has urged the public to immediately report to the city veterinary office any suspected case of bird flu in the city.
Avian Influenza is a disease afflicting domestic fowls and wild birds and can infect humans.
Symptoms of bird flu include among others, loss of appetite, drastic drop in egg production, facial swelling, ruffled feathers, diarrhea, sneezing, excessive thirst, nasal discharge, unexplained high mortality rate over three consecutive days, crown and wattle turned purple and sudden death.
