Education dep’t alarmed over rise of school gangs
By Aquiles Zonio

A TOP official of the Department of Education (DepEd) is alarmed over the alleged resurgence of gangs in some public schools here.

City schools division superintendent Estrella Lariosa said she would call all public guidance counselors and principals to a meeting to discuss how to address the problem.

Lariosa made the move in response to controversy involving a plan by the school officials of New Society National High School to expel 22 students involved in the gang.

Parents of the students involved aired their strong objection to the plan.

Several parents earlier complained to school authorities of the institution after their children were reportedly bullied and harassed by the campus gangsters.

Their children were reportedly threatened with bodily harm if they refuse to give money or anything valuable to the members of the gang.

Through the help of the victims, school authorities managed to identify members of the gang.

Lariosa, however, cautioned the school officials saying expelling the 22 students would not solve the problem.

"Kicking them out isn't the solution. It will only give problem to the schools where the students are transferred. What I am planning is to call for a meeting among principals and guidance counselors," Lariosa bared.

The schools superintendent claimed guidance services in public schools must be strengthened so they would know how to deal with juvenile delinquencies inside the school campus.
