Tourism officials hold meet

TOURISM stakeholders in the Soccsksargen Region gathered here last week to map out measures to improve the region's fledgling tourism industry.

General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said the regional tourism summit focused on the development of a viable tourism marketing plan for various tourism attractions and related services in the region.

Soccsksargen Region is composed of the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, (North) Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Cotabato, Koronadal, Kidapawan, and Tacurong.

"This is now the opportune time that we have to plan on how to market our region as a major tourist destination in the country," Acharon said.

Sohura Dimaampao, Department of Tourism regional director, said the tourism summit attracted at least 300 resort owners, hotel owners and restaurateurs, tour operators as well as tourism-related services providers.

She said the activity was a prelude to the Asean tourism summit slated on the third week of January next year in Davao City.

South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance Fuentes, chair of Regional Development Council, said they would push for various measures that would recreate or repackage the region.

"It's a sad fact that until now, the stigma of being our part of the former war zones in Central Mindanao still lingers. Many people are still not aware that we have overcome our peace and order problems," she said. (Allen V. Estabillo)
