Soccsksargen tops in supply of women OFWs

SOCCSKSARGEN Region has reportedly topped the deployment abroad of women workers coming from Mindanao over the last three years, a report from the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said.

The NSCB cited that since 2002, Soccsksargen has reportedly been sending over 23,000 women workers abroad annually, about 7,000 more than those from Northern Mindanao and Southern Mindanao and 9,000 more than those from Western Mindanao.

The region sent about three times the total number of women Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and almost four times that of the Caraga region.

Soccsksargen covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, (North) Cotabato and the cities of Koronadal, General Santos, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.

Abdulghani Umag, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration regional director, said the region currently has more than 500,000 OFWs deployed either as skilled or professional workers.

Most of the overseas workers are employed in Europe, United States, and countries in the Middle East and Asia.

Citing a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office, NSCB said 83.5 percent or at least eight of every 10 OFWs from Soccsksargen are women. (Allen V. Estabillo)
