Top Indon police officer here for visit By Aquiles Zonio
A HIGH-ranking police official from the Northern Indonesian region visited General Santos City to strengthen cross-border monitoring security cooperation between Philippines and Indonesia.
The 25-man delegation led by Brigadier General Lorensius Sutiariso, North Sulawesi regional police chief, arrived here Wednesday to meet with local government and police officials.
Sutiariso and his men paid a courtesy call on Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. before proceeding to the Central Mindanao police command to meet with his counterpart Chief Superintendent Danilo Mangila.
Acharon said the Indonesian police wanted to establish strong coordination with the local police to contain smuggling, illegal drug trade, and gun running.
However, the mayor claimed, the discussions focused much on strengthening border security to check terrorism.
Also discussed in passing was poaching by both the Indonesian and Filipino fishermen on the overlapping exclusive economic zones of the Philippines and Indonesia.
Rampant intrusions both by Filipino and Indonesian fishermen served as an irritant between the two countries over the years.
