Gulle: It all springs from self-love
By Inocentes A. Gulle
Your business is our business

I THINK all the ills of our society spring from selfishness. Selfishness is simply the expression of self-love. Greed is perhaps its ugliest and most malignant manifestation.

Now the Prime Minister of Thailand is surprised his athletes are not winning in the ongoing Manila Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Not as often as they usually do when games are held in Thailand, anyway. "There must be some cheating somewhere," especially on events decided by judges like, boxing, gymnastics, diving, etc. You can bet on that Mr. Prime Minister, there's cheating everywhere...sports competitions, business, politics, name it you have it. Remember, "a thief thinks everybody is a thief." Ask Mr. Recah Trinidad.

Our inordinate passion for basketball has cost us one possible gold medal this SEA Games. Why because everybody in this country wants to control the running of the game. Too many cooks upturned the kettle and spilled the broth. Where there are carcasses there the vultures converge.

Who will believe Garci, even if he tells the truth? What truth is there in this hellhole of politics in the first place? The only truth in this country is the one we want to believe. Everything else is false. Like Mr. Tatad, he wants that Garci not "withhold the truth"...(like he did when he voted to not open the second envelope during the Estrada impeachment trial, where he and his co-defenders of Erap thought the second envelope contained the most damning evidence against their idol [and benefactor?].)

The planned charter change (to Federal System) would probably pave the way for the Bangsamoro people to have their own Muslim State without necessarily seceding from the Republic. Maybe Mindanao can be divided into two or three states delineating a Muslim state and the non-Muslim. Problem is, how can we avoid the traumatic (and even bloody) events that transpired in the process of separation of India and Pakistan after England gave up its hold on the subcontinent. Are they thinking along those lines in their (MILF/GR) ongoing peace talks?

Our leaders today are too engrossed in their despicable fight for political supremacy (one side trying to wrest power and the other desperately holding on to it) that they seem oblivious of the fast-developing events in the international arena, events that would direly affect our own national well being. For example, what preparations are we doing to hedge on the possible (imminent?) downfall of the US dollar vis-à-vis the Euro? Or, are our leaders aware that the powers that direct international terrorism (by their own pronouncements) would stop at nothing less than complete destruction of Israel and final annihilation of all "unbelievers" (in Islam)?

"For in the days before the flood, people were drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing what would happen until the flood came and took them all away."
