Two quakes jolt GenSan
A MILD earthquake rocked southwestern Mindanao and its nearby areas Wednesday dawn last week, the second in less than 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) office said.
Nani Danlag, science research specialist of the Phivolcs station here, said the temblor was felt at intensity five at 12:53 a.m. in Cotabato City and the coastal town of Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat but no damages were reported.
"It was caused by the movement of tectonic plates along the Cotabato Trench," Danlag said.
She said the quake was measured with a magnitude of 5.7 at its epicenter, which is some 140 kilometers southwest of Isulan, the capital town of Sultan Kudarat province.
The quake was also felt at intensity four in the cities of Pagadian, Tacurong, and Koronadal.
"We have been monitoring some aftershocks but its magnitude and intensity are not quite significant," Danlag said.
At around 9:33 a.m. on Wednesday, an intensity two earthquake also shook southwestern Mindanao also due to a tectonic movement traced at the Cotabato Trench.
It was recorded with a magnitude of four at its epicenter located 85 kilometers southwest of Isulan.
Danlag said they had recorded mild temblors in the area last November 20 and 25 that were traced to tectonic movements along the Davao trench and the Philippine fault, respectively.
Government geology experts have been closely watching at least five major offshore trenches, three of them in Mindanao, for possible strong quakes that might generate catastrophic hazards like tsunamis.
Among those being watched is the Cotabato Trench near central and southern Mindanao area. (Allen V. Estabillo)
