Coffee growing pushed in S. Kudarat
KORONADAL CITY -- Officials in Sultan Kudarat province are aggressively promoting the cultivation of coffee in anticipation of increased demand in the international market.
Sultan Kudarat provincial agriculturist Nestor Casador said the completion of the five-year coffee development plan in the town of Senator Ninoy Aquino is aimed at increasing the volume of local coffee production.
At present, around 2,400 hectares of coffee plantations already exist in Senator Ninoy Aquino, formerly Kulaman, a remote town in this province.
"With the formulation of the coffee development plan, we want to increase the figure to 3,600 hectares over the next five years," Casador said.
Casador said they are eyeing to improve the present production volume of 600 kilograms of dried coffee to 900 kilograms.
The coffee industry currently accounts for 20 percent of economic activities in Senator Ninoy Aquino.
Casador pointed out they want to eventually establish Senator Ninoy Aquino as the "coffee production center" not just of Sultan Kudarat province but the entire Central Mindanao region as well.
Industry data showed that national demand for coffee is currently pegged at 56,000 metric tons and projected to grow by two percent in succeeding years. (RBS)
