105 fishermen repatriated from Indonesia
ONE hundred five Filipino fishermen who were repatriated from Bitung in Indonesia were turned over to Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. at the Philippine Coast Guard office on December 31.
Fishing magnates Marfin Tan and Domingo Teng were also present during the turnover.
The fishermen, who were detained in Indonesia for three to five months for entering Bitung without proper documents, were released by Indonesian authorities after a series of negotiations with General W. Bambang, Regional Police Commander of Bitung.
Bambang visited General Santos in November last year and met with Acharon and officials of fishing associations.
After the turnover, PCG Commander Oscar Endona and the City Social Welfare Office headed by Rebecca V. Magante provided immediate assistance for the released fishermen.
Of the 105 fishermen, 31 are from Pagadian City, eight from Kiamba and Maitum, 10 from Sta. Maria in Davao del Sur, 23 from Glan in Sarangani and the rest are from this city. (Press release)
