Bright prospects for Pinoy animators seen

AN INDUSTRY stalwart said more Filipino talents could crash into the elite circle of animators that has taken the world by storm.

Ma. Lourdes Gopalan, board member and education committee head of the Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. (ACPI), said during a recent forum here that demand for animation services from the Philippines would grow further based from current trends.

Unknown to many, she said, Filipino animators were behind world animation hits as Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, and Pokemon.

Gopalan said the global animation industry is still growing and could hit the US$50 billion mark worldwide in the next few years.

She urged local artist from Mindanao to follow their compatriots who have made a name for themselves in the world animation industry.

"Bright investment prospects for global animation industry are seen in Mindanao with the surge of information and communication technology (ICT) and the growing pool of highly-skilled ICT human resource in the island-region," Gopalan said.

The ACPI is an organization supported by the government to promote Filipino animators in global markets.

At present, there are estimated 5,000 animators spread throughout the country.

Most of these animators work for top-grossing animation industries like Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, HBO, Cartoon Network, and Marvel Comics among others.

Animated series are being co-produced by animation studios in other countries. (RBS)
