Koronadal barges into top 20 competitive cities

KORONADAL CITY -- The city increased its stock as an emerging investment and economic hub in southern and central Mindanao as it emerged anew as one of the country's top 20 most competitive cities last year.

Mayor Fernando Miguel said several top domestic and foreign investors are now taking a serious look at the city's viability in hosting major trade and investment ventures after it landed among the top five most competitive cities in the small cities category of the 2005 Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project of the Asian Institute of Management's (AIM) Policy Center.

"We were credited for having the most updated and comprehensive programs and policies for trade and investments, governance and socio-economic development," said Miguel.

In 2003, AIM adjudged the city as the country's most competitive small-sized city.

Last year, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry declared it as the 2005 most business-friendly city in Mindanao.

AIM announced the city's latest achievement last week during a forum in Intercontinental Hotel in Makati City attended by local officials from various parts of the country.

The city was among the 37 small cities (with population of less than 200,000) surveyed by the AIM in collaboration with the Asia Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development, and the German Development Cooperation.

The parameters of the survey were the cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, human resources and training, responsiveness of local government, quality of life, infrastructure, and linkages and accessibility.

Miguel said the city's latest feat practically mirrors the local government's transparent leadership and ability to implement progressive socio-economic and development programs and policies.

He also credited the "resiliency, aggressiveness and optimism" of local residents, which he cited as one of the biggest assets of the city.
