Koronadal picks representatives for regional tilt

ELIMINATION round was held in Koronadal City last February 14 at the ProTech Center in preparation for the Socsksargen-wide oratorical and storytelling contests in July.

Elementary and secondary schools throughout the city participated in the contest, which is now on its third year of advancing the talent of Socsksargen's youth.

Winners in the storytelling that was open for elementary pupils are Verna Roz Taperna of Koronadal Central Elementary School-1, and Rolando Mari Doria of Notre Dame of Marbel University -- IBED who tied in the first place.

Jade Lawrence Javellana of Koronadal National Comprehensive High School won in the oratorical contest.

The contest sponsors, Socsksargen Multi-Sectoral Coalition for Sustainable Mineral Development, the Department of Education, and the Sagittarius Mines Inc. tour around the Socsksargen area each year to conduct eliminations in the cities of Koronadal, General Santos and Tacurong, and the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat.

The final round is conducted during South Cotabato's T'nalak Festival held every July.

Bong Coloso, senior corporate and government affairs officer of Sagittarius Mines Inc., said the contest is designed not only to harness the public speaking skills of the region's youth but also to give them a chance to be heard talking about issues in the region, particularly on mineral development, economic development and environmental conservation.
