Tuna canners load up Sarangani relief truck to S. Leyte
By Aquiles Zonio

ALABEL, Sarangani -- Tuna canners led the private sector of Sarangani and General Santos City in loading up a Provincial Government truck with sardines, used clothing, and rice that arrived Thursday last week in Liloan, Southern Leyte en route to St. Bernard.

Cooperation between government and private sector in resource mobilization, triggered by Governor Miguel Dominguez's broadcast appeal for donations on Monday, immediately packed the truck with relief goods.

"What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule. Post comment.

Tuna canners contributed the bulk of goods.

About 15,000 tins (300 boxes) of sardines were donated by the General Santos City-based Tuna Canners Association, while the Sarangani Provincial Government sent 2,400 tins (50 boxes).

"The tuna canners are in full support anytime for a good cause, especially in helping our fellow Filipinos," said Marianing Fernandez, association president.

Earlier, the governor asked Fernandez for any type of donations that their organization could possibly extend.

"We will take the responsibility of ensuring that whatever aid you may give will reach the beneficiaries," Dominguez said.

Hermelo Latoja, the provincial social welfare officer, identified the donor-canning corporations as Ocean, Philbest, Alliance, Gentuna, Century, and Celebes.

Dominguez, who chairs the provincial disaster coordinating council, sent off Wednesday a 13-man quick response team with the full-packed truck.

And halfway into its journey, the truck picked up some more sardines, noodles and coffee from Governor Erlpe John Amante in Agusan del Norte.

At the Lipata ferry terminal in Surigao on Thursday morning, terminal manager Wilfredo Sinco granted an "almost 50 percent fare discount" for the truck's ferry crossing to Liloan, Southern Leyte.

According to Dominguez, many of his constituents trace their roots to Leyte.
