Agri allocates P25M for road network

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) earmarked some P25 million for the development of a new road network that would connect various emerging agribusiness zones in Banga, South Cotabato.

Banga Mayor Isidro Janita said the proposed road development project is part of the agricultural infrastructure package for his town that was approved recently by DA's Infrastructure for Rural Enhancement Program (Infres).

"The road network will link up our corn expansion areas to the economic zones of the province and the neighboring areas," he said.

Janita said the local government would forge a memorandum of agreement later this month with Infres and DA for the joint implementation of the project.

Infres is a government initiative executed by the DA with funding assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

The project, which started in February 2002, is a seven-year development program aimed at enhancing rural infrastructure and minimizing rural poverty by increasing agricultural productivity and profitability.

Janita said the road project would cover sitios Camdas, Ebenizer and Lambalas of Barangay Rang-ay, which is one the major corn production areas of the town.

He said the three sitios connect the town proper to various upland communities in the area.

"It will help increase the income of our farmers as it will ultimately bring down the transportation costs of our agricultural products," said Janita.

He said they also expect the project to usher new investment opportunities for the area. (Allen V. Estabillo)
