S. Cotabato eyed as major bamboo veneer producer

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) plans to develop South Cotabato as a major producer of high quality bamboo veneer products that are now enjoying increasing demands in the US markets.

Dr. Rico Cabangon, senior science research specialist of the DOST's Forest Products Research and Development Institute, said bamboo furniture makers in the province have the potential of making it big in the bamboo veneer export market due to the availability of cheap raw materials and highly skilled workers.

Cabangon, who heads Los Baños-based institute's veneer and plywood laboratory and mechanical processing and product development division, along with colleague Eduardo M. Atienza, a science research assistant, are in South Cotabato for a three-day training workshop on new technologies and products out of bamboo.

The training-workshop on "Production of Floor Tiles, Table Tops and Panels from Bamboo Veneer and Special Effects Finishing Technology" was among the highlights of the province's Kawayan (bamboo) Festival.

Cabangon said bamboo veneers laminated to plywood are gaining popularity in the US as flooring material and a walling panel.

He said a manufacturer of table tops made of bamboo veneer based in Angeles City in Pampanga now exports at least 60 products to US every month.

Atienza introduced various special effects finishing technologies that focus on the use of some waste materials out of bamboo, wood metals, and plastics. (Allen V. Estabillo)
