Gulle: It's time we look beyond local politics By Inocentes A. Gulle Your Business is Our Business
WE HAVE spent these many years fighting among ourselves that we have paid little attention to developments in other parts of the world that could direly affect our very own existence. I doubt if our leaders are aware of the potential dangers developing in the Middle East today.
Who, for example, among them is watching how the western powers would react to Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's defiance of their, even the UN's, demand for Iran to stop its uranium enrichment project that would enable Iran to produce a nuclear bomb. Sources say President Ahmadenijad has openly declared that he intends to proceed with the project despite them.
In the event of an open confrontation between the western powers and/or the UN, a very likely possibility, what do you think could happen? My guess is that Iran would first use its oil power. Just a mere announcement that it would curtail its oil production world oil prices would rise like hell. That happened not too long ago, didn't it? What about if it really does? Would the West and the UN reconsider and allow Iran to go ahead?
If they would, then Iran, with the possibility of achieving nuclear capability in due time, will become the most influential, maybe the leader of the Islamic nations in the Middle East. With such power, it can now mobilize its terror brigades and pursue without hesitation its avowed primary objective, wipe Israel off the map, with the United States, Britain and Europe standing by helplessly. Or would they?
In the mean time the parties involved in the above impasse, will perhaps try to delay its coming to a head and continue seeking diplomatic solution. Meanwhile, Iran will continue its nuclear program even as it lets loose its proxy, Hamas, one of the most deadly terrorists who, incidentally, has captured the Palestinian parliament in the last elections, will force Israel to accede to their demand, cede East Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount, to the Palestinians, their long sought dream. Actually this is only the initial stage of their overall objective to wipe off Israel, in due time.
These pictures of very probable scenarios were gleaned from a published report of a group whose main concern is to keenly watch and analyze current events that directly relate to world political and economic affairs.
That these events could develop into a world crisis, a world war at the worst, at any moment, is a dire possibility, yet our government seems oblivious to them. The least case scenario is an oil crunch, but there seems to be no preparation being done to hedge such eventuality. Right now reports say that the average housewife can no longer afford kitchen gas. What it?
All our leaders are doing is fight like dogs trying to grab or hold on to a piece of dirty rotten meat while the storm clouds are darkening sky. Then suddenly we'll find ourselves buried in the mud like the hapless inhabitants of Guinsaugon, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, who were busy with their daily lives even as they were unaware of the impending doom. Not that their leaders were not warned long before, but no one believed it could happen.
So have we been warned by sages of some 2,500 years ago, but I don't think any of our leaders would believe, let alone those who believe in nothing but that which is red.
