Disaster body orders Lake Sebu villagers to relocate

KORONADAL CITY -- The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council of South Cotabato ordered the immediate relocation of residents in a mountain village in Lake Sebu town due to an imminent landslide.

Heide Lacdo-o, disaster management coordinator of the provincial social welfare and development office, said at least 29 families in Barangay Hanoon, Lake Sebu are presently in peril due to the possible collapse of a soft portion of a mountain near their homes.

"They should be relocated to safer areas as soon as possible," said Lacdo-o.

Lacdo-o said the disaster council is currently coordinating with the local government of Lake Sebu for the relocation of the affected residents and the provision of various assistance.

Members of the Provincial Government's disaster response and rescue team earlier went to the area to evaluate the situation.

The visit was in response to a report made by village officials to the Provincial Government noting the discovery of some cracks near a community of T'boli folks.

Lacdo-o said the area was considered a danger zone since landslides already occurred there at the height of the rainy season in August last year.

"The entire community should leave the area immediately since the area's situation is getting worse due to the continuing rains," she said.

Meantime, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Mines and Geosciences Bureau reported that it found at least three major fractures near a mountain hosting the mine tunnels at the gold rush village of Kematu in T'boli town.

The mines bureau and South Cotabato Mines Regulatory Board jointly issued an order last February 24 temporarily closing down about 100 mine tunnels in Sitio Tunnel, Barangay Kematu reportedly due to a looming landslide. (Allen V. Estabillo)
