Rhythms of the Voice
By Lara May Velasco Quizon

THE power of speech has been proven through the ages. The ability to communicate effectively can serve as a ladder to success.

Good speakers always have space in our society. They are considered as one factor, which has a great impact to the listeners. They are "influential" in a sense that they can persuade another person or shape the minds of their listeners in a way they wanted to.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

But a good voice is not the only licensed needed. A thorough knowledge of all the theories in communication provides an announcer an easy hand in determining the kind of "language" he or she is likely to use with a certain type of audience.

Other important characteristic and traits such as credibility, originality, discipline, initiative and assertiveness are plus factors for an announcer.

Another important things must consider to an announcer is to have a depth learning on all the technicalities of the business.

This will ensure a smooth flow of communication between the sender (speaker) to the receiver (his or her audience) and vice versa.

Hello Mr. DJ, can I make a request? Okay, so I guess you are familiar with these phrases.

The callers on air, the music, the FM stations, the DJ's are part of what we call "the music industry". The primary purpose why we often listen to Fm stations is to entertain. Right? And generally, all of us love music.

A disc jockey is an announcer on a radio program that presents recorded music, usually interspersed with comments and commercials.

Disc jockeys and newsreaders sit in a studio to broadcast a program. Disc jockey or deejay (DJ) is an announcer in a musical program. DJ also writes script or continuity to his or her program. There are DJs that really prepares their program.

There are those who don't prepare the continuity or script -- they just adlib the presentation of the song, the conversation with the listener, the opinion about the song, the singer or the program.

There are FM stations that based their program on their theme.

DJ's hide their original name because according to them, they are handling two personalities. The personality they build in radio is different from the personality outside the station.

Let's see what's behind this DJ.

"Pwedeng-pwede." Are you familiar with this FM slogan?

How about the female "kikay" DJ? Okay. So I guess the listeners of this station knew about it.

"Iba yung DJ na may sinabi sa DJ na may laman ang sinasabi". That was the simple words but very meaningful words of iFM 91.9 DJ jersey Kikay.

Jersey Kikay is a Mass Communication graduate at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas College. She derived her air name Jersey from the movie "Cayote Ugly". The female lead character of the film has great impact to her, and that girl lives in New Jersey. So DJ Jersey got Jersey and added "kikay" to her air name.

"Masayang maging DJ. Overwhelming, I can't describe the happiness". She really loves being a DJ. DJ Jersey Kikay is really a Kikay and a versatile DJ. As for compensation, she said it could cover up her personal needs.

"Kailangan talaga ang boses. Kailangang articulate. Dapat maganda ang boses mo saan ka man itapon. With the use of voice, dako kaayo ug tabang ang sound effects to create mood. You must convince na kung kikay ka, kailangang kikay ka talaga. Kung sexy, sexy rin dapat."

She is a type of person that looks at the positive side. On the difficulties she encountered, she said, "Well, so far it is not as difficult."

How about the callers' most requested song? DJ Jersey Kikay: "Dapat naka-categorize. We're more on uso. Sumasabay kami sa uso. Kung ano yung soundtrack sa TV, pini-play namin para di kami mapag-iwanan."

Jersey Kikay leaves a message to those who aspire to become a DJ. And the messegae goes like this: "Before you indulge into disc jockeying, you must know kung ano gusto mo. Kahit pa malaki ang sweldo, pero ang happiness wala. Kahit pa marami kang pera kung di ka masaya, magiging boring. Kasi kailangan ang love of work, perseverance, commitment, at saka kailangan mong maging creative. Create a name to entertain".

Who will be our next DJ? Aha! There he is!!!

"Basta disco, Wild FM."

The name Carlos Miguel sounds familiar, right? DJ Carlos Miguel derived his air name based from a teleserye.

DJ Carlos Miguel is a Mass Communication graduate of Note Dame of Dadiangas College. He started being a DJ at the age of 17. At that young age, he was already involved and showed talent in the field of radio broadcast.

DJ Carlos Miguel says, "Masarap maging DJ para kang nag-drugs".

According to him, the things needed as a DJ are very basic. How to pronounce words properly, basic English, and the voice. Being single, the pay is more than enough for himself.

The age bracket of their listeners is from 15-35 years old. But generally Wild FM appeals to the masses.

The callers most requested song is the song that is "in" today. As he says, genre is changing. He handles situation full of understanding. So far he has not heard a negative feedback. But if ever, he will gladly accept it.

DJ Carlos Miguel's message to the aspiring DJ: "If ever, enjoy lang talaga ang life. Love your work, enjoy yourself, enjoy your work. Pag di mo mahal ang trabaho mo, hindi ka mag-eenjoy."

"Never have to stop learning. Alam mo kung saan ka banda. Kailangan mong makibagay."

That was the message of DJ Ben Kulot of Campus Radio FM 102.3 NINDUTA-AH!

DJ Ben Kulot is a Mass Communication graduate at General Santos City Institute of Technology (GSCIT). He derived his air handle Ben to his baptismal name and the Kulot because his hair is curly.

For him, being a DJ is good. It is not a work; it is just a sound trip in your house. He is a type of a person that smiles all his life.

Ben Kulot is a family man and has 2 kids. He has no problems with his income from disc jockeying. He is more concern with his listeners.

"Mas masaya 'pag masaya ang tao.

"The important things needed as a DJ is to handle bigger responsibility which is to entertain, to inform and at the same time to educate. And voice acting and projection is also needed."

If 'Kailangan pa bang I-memorize yan?' sounds familiar, it is because it is the tagline of K101 FM Love Radio.

Behind this station, there is DJ Kabayang Joe. He derived his air name Kabayang from his idol Kabayang Noli de Castro and Joe from his name Joel.

Kabayang Joe is a Bachelor of Science in Secretarial Administration graduate at Magsaysay College General Santos City. He is a well-informed and entertaining DJ.

He is already 10 years in this station and has built a reputation as a friend to lean on.

Kabayang Joe, what is your message to the aspiring DJ's? Kabayang Joe: "First of all, they should have a good attitude. Willing to sacrifice because it is for their benefit."
