Drivers seek P1.50 fare hike By Aquiles Zonio
JEEPNEY and multicab drivers and operators in General Santos City are asking for a P1.50 fare hike.
They said the increase is necessary to defray another round of fuel price hike implemented by the oil firms last week.
Orly Sabelita, chair of Confederation of Transport Cooperatives (Contraca), said they would submit their petition anytime this week.
Contraca is the biggest transport cooperative in the region.
Sabelita claimed drivers and transport operators are left with no other option but to increase fare hike amid the continued increase in prices of fuel products.
The minimum fare in the region for the first four kilometers would reach P8 if their petition would be approved.
The drivers are also asking for a P1 additional fare for every succeeding kilometer.
At present, the minimum fare in this city is P6.50 for the first four kilometers.
However, Contraca officials revealed the P1.50 could still be avoided.
"We would be amenable to a P0.50 increase if the LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) and the local government could give us a guarantee that no more 'colorum' vehicles would be allowed to operate in the city," Sabelita said.
He said legitimate drivers and operators are losing millions of pesos in income due to continuous operation of "colorum" vehicles.
