More S. Cotabato residents are becoming literate
ALTERNATIVE Learning Supervisor Carmelita Cabarubias announced during a conference that simple literacy rate of the Division of South Cotabato obtained a significant increase of 6.24 percent, from 90.21 percent last November 1994 to a zooming 96.45 percent this year.
The figure shows that only 3.55 percent residents of the said province have not enjoyed the right to education.
Cabarubias owed the progress to the perpetual assistance of the local government units (LGUs) of the said province, community leaders and members, and non-government and civic organizations.
Credit is also due to the service providers, which include the LGUs, Notre Dame of Marbel University, Polytechnic State College, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. and others, who work hand in hand with the Department of Education (DepEd) in organizing literacy classes.
Despite the impressive increase of the literacy rate, DepEd Undersecretary Ramon Bacani appealed to the private organizations to continue supporting literacy programs and education support given to people in remote and impoverished communities.
Bacani emphasized that lack of access to education and increasing juvenile delinquency are the root causes of illiteracy.
For this reason, Bacani urged the business sector, media and all private organizations, as well as the Department of Interior and Local Government and the DepEd to join forces to fully combat the problem on illiteracy. (Press release)
