Tornado slams plantation By Aquiles Zonio
TAMPAKAN, South Cotabato -- A 25-hectare banana plantation in the hinterland village in Tampakan town, South Cotabato sustained heavy losses after a tornado slammed the area Thursday last week.
Mayor Claudius Barroso estimated the damage at more than P4.5 million.
Residents said heavy rains preceded the tornado, which took them by surprise.
The twister battered Kipalbig, one of the villages in this town, which produce export-quality banana.
Barroso, a long time resident of the area, said this is the first time in the history of Tampakan that it was hit by a whirlwind.
The barangay council plans to hold a special session to declare the area under the state of calamity.
This, they said, would enable the village to use its five percent calamity funds.
Barroso also pledged to support the measure once it is submitted to the Municipal Council for approval.
