Unsung heroes to be honored in Tuna Festival
LOCAL fishermen, the unsung heroes of the General Santos tuna industry, will be given a long-overdue recognition through the holding of the Gabi ng Parangal Para sa Mandaragat.
The award will serve as one of the highlights of the first-ever Karagatan Awards, which will be held on September 2, 2006 at the General Santos City Oval Plaza.
The Karagatan Awards was conceptualized by the Tuna Festival Council 2006 to formally recognize and appreciate the local fishermen, key players who are primarily responsible for the rise of the Tuna Festival.
The Awards are open to fishermen engaged in either hand line or hook and line fishing operations in the Socsargen area.
A company or individual may nominate a maximum of only two persons. All nominations will be given equal weight and will be treated confidentially by the Tuna Festival Council's Karagatan Awards Committee.
Nominees must have started out as crews (pasahero), who then were elevated to pump boat operators, and who currently are pump boat owners holding a certificate of ownership for at least one fishing vessel.
Nominees shall be required to secure a certificate of employment proving that they were once pasaheros and pump boat operators before becoming vessel owners.
In addition, nominees must be residents of General Santos or should be doing business in General Santos as proven by resident certificates and should be affiliated with any fishing organization or association in the Socsargen area.
Nominees should also have no criminal or other related records, especially in environmental issues related to his fishing operations.
Each nominee will also be required to submit an essay of 150 words, which may be written in Filipino or any Filipino dialect or English, specifying the roles and duties of each member of his family that had contributed to the success of his fishing operations and what help he had given back to his community.
Nomination forms with complete attachments should be submitted to the Tuna Festival Council, care of the GSC Chamber Secretariat, 3rd Floor, Yap Mabuhay Building, Manasanitas Street, General Santos City on or before 4 p.m. on July 31, 2006.
Awardees will be notified in writing by the Tuna Festival Secretariat once the Karagatan Awards Committee has come to a decision.
The decision of the Karagatan Awards Committee shall be considered final and shall not be subjected to any protest or appeal.
The Karagatan Awards Committee will select ten winners, who will each receive P25,000 along with special handcrafted trophies and other gift items.
