Airline eyes August for Gensan-Manila inaugural flight
By Edwin G. Espejo

THE inaugural General Santos City-Manila flight of Cebu Pacific will most likely proceed next month, a top air transportation official in this city recently said.

General Santos City Air Transportation Office manager Nathaniel Nazareno said construction of the check-in counter of Cebu Pacific inside the General Santos City airport terminal complex has already started.

Nazareno also revealed that Cebu Pacific will construct its own cargo terminal just beside the cargo building of Philippine Airlines.

"It's final but Cebu Pacific has yet to set the exact date of its inaugural flight next month," Nazareno told Sun.Star.

Cebu Pacific will reportedly be deploying its brand new Airbus 320 aircraft for the General Santos-Manila flight.

Once the Gokongwei-owned airline starts its regular flights, it would increase to three the daily flights out of the General Santos City Airport.

At present Philippine Airlines and its sister company Air Philippines are making daily flights to and from this city.

Nazareno said Cebu Pacific will initially make at least four flights a week for the Gensan-Manila route and will increase its frequency in the coming months.

"Cebu Pacific flights will arrive from Manila at 1:00 p.m. and will leave for the same at 2:00 in the afternoon," Nazareno revealed.

The General Santos City Airport, opened in the mid-90's, has one of the country's most modern runaways and is capable of accommodating even the largest military aircraft of the US. Its bulk of revenues however come from cargoes and fresh tuna products from the General Santos Fish Port Complex.

The city is shipping out more than 10 tons of fresh chilled tuna a day for export to Japan and the United States.

With its proposed afternoon flights, Cebu Pacific could accommodate late cargoes for connecting flights to the said destinations.

"Cebu Pacific is making assurances it could provide local exporters connecting flights for their tuna products anywhere in the world," Nazareno said.
