City honors top businessmen
FOR the second year in a row, the City Government again honored some of the city's top businessmen as the celebration of the Yaman Gensan 2006 drew to a close recently.
Cited as Entrepreneur of the Year in the company category was General Santos Doctors Hospital, which started operating in the early 70s.
Mommy Gina Tuna Resources owned by Joaquin Lu, one of the local pioneers in tuna processing industry, was also selected as Entrepreneur of the Year.
The two bested other nominees in their respective categories to win a 5-8 kilo trophy and P30,000 cash prize.
Also receiving major awards were Santa Cruz Seafoods Inc., which was adjudged Employer of the Year.
Santa Cruz Trading is owned by former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Joel Santos, grandson of General Paulino Santos from whom the city was named.
For the second straight year, Frescomar Seahelm Corporation was voted Product Innovator of the Year for its Tuna Jerky product. This firm is a joint venture of Eliseo "Rock" Garay and Tito Santos.
Two special awards were likewise handed out during the awards nights. Bank Orient Press, owned by the Banquerigo Family, was awarded Loyal Enterprise of the Year and Cargill Philippines was honored as the 2006 Local Taxpayer of the Year.
The Yaman Awards is an annual search for outstanding entrepreneurs of General Santos City "who exemplify the true wealth and spirit of a true entrepreneur," according to the award organizers.
Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. who handed out the award for the Entrepreneur of the Year said the awardees were, "recognized not only because of the steadfast will for success, but because of unswerving responsibility towards others."
Other nominees in the different categories were Sarangani packaging Products Corp., Citra Mina, Tropical Motorama parts Corp. and Shalom Crest Wizard Academy for the Entrepreneur of the Year (company category).
Miso General Merchandise, Jo-Ann's Bakeshop, Ryan's Lechon House and Shem Foods for the Entrepreneur of the Year (single proprietorship category).
Also nominated were Vercide Engineering Works Inc, Pescarich Manufacturing Corp., Ecco Hardware Inc and Mandarin Tea Garden for the Employer of the Year won by Santa Cruz Seafoods Inc.
For the Product of Innovator of the Year won by Frescomar, the nominees were Cornhusk Association of the Philippines, Jasp Food Products and RML Products. (Edwin G. Espejo)
