Agency warns against text scam messages
THE public is strongly advised to be vigilant and not fall prey to text scam messages informing innocent subscribers that they have won a special prize sponsored by telecommunications companies, government agencies, and foundations.
National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said mobile phone users should ignore messages from ordinary 11-digit cellphone numbers that are asking winners to pay cash or deposit money in the bank allegedly to pay Value Added Tax and other fees.
Some text scam operators would even simply ask for load as a condition for claiming their prize.
A fraudulent call is also made or an SMS is sent for the primary purpose of soliciting money for reasons, which usually involve a situation of dire need (an emergency such as a loved one is in the hospital or has met an accident).
As the government agency mandated to regulate the telecommunications industry, the NTC is very vigilant in its campaign against illegal text messaging.
