Agency shelter aid for calamity victims sought

ALABEL, Sarangani -- The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) is seeking "core shelter" assistance for at least 867 coastal families whose houses were damaged by strong waves last week.

In resolutions passed Monday, the PDCC asked the Department of Social Welfare and Development "to provide core shelter assistance to the affected families of the province due to the recent occurrence of sea-swell that devastated their houses."

The council also asked the Provincial Board to declare the entire province under a state of calamity.

Heavy downpour and strong waves battered coastal villages on August 10 through the weekend.

At least 4,627 persons in the three western coastal towns have either totally or partially lost their homes, according to Rene Punzalan, PDCC action officer.

Punzalan said Maitum reported that 45 houses were destroyed with 23 more were damaged.

Kiamba had 18 houses destroyed while 102 were damaged, while Maasim had 31 houses destroyed with 558 houses damaged.

The initial amount of damage was placed at P4.5 million. Figures, however, were expected to rise when Glan submits its disaster monitoring report.

"Temporary relief operations shall be handled by the municipalities concerned," Governor Miguel Dominguez said.

Dominguez said the province prefers to extend assistance for "permanent solutions" but the Provincial Government would augment in relief operations when municipal calamity funds have been exhausted.

The governor directed the engineering office to immediately assess damage to provincial roads and structures. (Sarangani Information Office)
