Authorities appeal for vigilance amid JI scare

MILITARY and police officials in Central Mindanao recently called on civilians to be more vigilant in the wake of renewed bombing threats in the different parts of the region.

Central Mindanao Police Director German Doria confirmed receiving intelligence reports that alleged Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) members had reportedly entered the region.

"We are validating the report," he said even as he implored residents to immediately report any presence of suspected terrorists in their areas.

Text messages warning of bombing activities in the cities of Davao in Southern Mindanao and General Santos, Koronadal Tacurong, Kidapawan, Koronadal and in Makilala town in North Cotabato circulated here last week.

Reports said three alleged women JI members slipped into the coastal area of Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat from Indonesia last August 7, three days before the twin explosions in Kidapawan City that injured several people.

The women, allegedly accompanied by a male JI member during their arrival, were reportedly trained on making explosive materials.

Doria however assured that the police and military are trying their best to possibly avert any terrorist attacks.

The business sector in this city has strongly reacted to the reported presence of JI members and bomb threats.

In a local television interview, Tony Veneracion, president of this city's business chamber, called on the authorities to validate the report to prevent undue panic to the public.

Veneracion expressed alarms that the terror threats would affect investors' perception of the area as well as the local business climate.
