Maitum opens 1st 'maternity home'

MAITUM, Sarangani -- Local funds and cash prizes from national awards, pooled in over two years of intermittent construction, finally produced the first "maternity home" in the province.

It was the brainchild of Rosalina Roxas, a midwife for 25 years.

"The maternity home is a proof of how we truly care for the mother and child," said Mayor George Yabes.

Its delivery room has two delivery tables, two examining tables and basic pediatric and obstetrical equipment. It has separate rooms for supplies, receiving, staff, two comfort rooms, and two patients room.

Construction of the maternity home started in 2003 with seed funds of P60,000 from the Municipal Government while the Provincial Government added P300,000.

In 2004, Maitum was the national winner in the Search for the Most Child-Friendly Municipality in the Philippines. P250,000 from the P1 million cash prize went to the maternity home construction.

Maitum also won an award from Gawad Galing Pook Foundation for promoting child rights in 2005.

The P100,000 from the cash prize also went to the maternity home.

Roxas, the maternity home caretaker, was 2nd placer in the 2005 Ten Most Outstanding Health Workers in the Philippines.

The award was given by the Department of Health and Rotary Club of Makati.

Rose Yabes, an NGO member of municipal council for women and children, described the maternity home as "angkop sa panahon at malaking tulong sa ina at bata." (Sarangani Information Office)
