SMI joins tree planting

SAGITTARIUS Mines Inc. recently participated in the tree planting activities along the highways of South Cotabato and Davao del Sur last week in response to the nationwide "Green Philippines Highway" program of the government.

SMI provided at least 6,000 seedlings to the tree planting program, according to the company's senior environment officer Jose Sebua Jr.

"The private sector has the responsibility to protect our environment and this is our way of showing that," he said.

Rolando Doria, Sagittarius project coordinator, said they deployed more than 100 employees to take part in the activity.

Doria said that aside from the seedlings, the firm will also provide tree guards to protect the seedlings as they grow.

Doria said the company shouldered the seedlings for at least 14 kilometers stretch of both sides of the road.

Sebua said among the prominent areas covered by the firm's tree planting is the road leading to the airport of General Santos.

The species provided by the firm include mahogany and narra, according to Sebua.

Sampulna said that Consunji Industries, Inc. also provided thousands of seedlings for the three planting activity in the northern part of Central Mindanao.

Consunji is involved in logging activities through an Integrated Forest Management Agreement with the government in Senator Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat province.
