THE local business chamber expressed strong support to initiatives that would make General Santos City an alternative hub for the Information and Communication Technology industry in Mindanao.
Pilar Afuang, executive director of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc., said in an interview Thursday that representatives from the Commission on Information and Communication Technology recently visited the city to find out its potentials to host the industry.
"Compared to other cities in the [ Central Mindanao ] region, GenSan is better off in terms of capability to host the ICT industry," she noted.
She cited that this city, dubbed as the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines," has already medical transcription companies.
Afuang also said that two local groups have applied to become Information Technology parks with the Board of Investments, but they have not been given approval yet.
Efforts to make the city an alternative ICT hub has been one of the major initiatives of the local government unit and the Department of Trade and Industry here.
Afuang said they fully back the moves to realize the initiative, adding they hope to see call center investors coming in when the city is totally prepared.
She conceded that ICT facilities in the city are not that advanced and is moving slowly. (BSS)
