KORONADAL CITY -- Residents from different barangays of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato completed the seminar on Conservation Field School (CFS) on Abaca, with emphasis on enhancing the capacity of stakeholders on conservation and production of the indigenous product - abaca.
Provincial Agriculture officer Rey Legaste, who conceptualized the idea of conservation, said that areas in South Cotabato and even elsewhere planted with this indigenous plant is waning but the demand for T'nalak products are increasing.
The salient feature of the training is based on the project research conducted by scientists from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB), funded by Searca and supported by Fida, in collaboration with the Provincial Government of South Cotabato and local government of Lake Sebu.
The culmination activity of the seminar was highlighted with a field tour of the abaca plantation area in Barangay Klubi in Lake Sebu where recipients were privileged to gain knowledge, skills, and be aware of the recommended technology to protect and preserve abaca areas as the potential source of raw materials for quality T'nalak products.
