Tuesday, October 07, 2008 Palay, corn yield rise in C. Mindanao
KORONADAL CITY -- Central Mindanao posted positive growth in palay and corn production in the first half of the year, the regional office of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) reported.
Palay production grew by 16 percent to 502,552 metric tons from 431,437 MT in the same period last year.
"Palay production for both rain-fed and irrigated areas increased [in the six months to June 2008] with the sufficient water supply brought about by frequent rainfall," the BAS report said.
"In the same period last year, the region experienced dry season beginning [in] the last quarter of 2006," it added.
Corn production in the region also grew by 49 percent to 448,878 MT from 300,989 in the first half of 2007, BAS data showed.
The growth in corn output was also attributed to favorable weather condition.
The hybridization program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) for both palay and corn was also cited to the increase in production output, the report said.
