Trenas mum on community college By Ronilo Ladrido Pamonag
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas appears lukewarm on the proposal of Councilor Erlinda Liberiaga to put up an Iloilo City Community College.
"Let's see if we have money (for the establishment of the school)," he said Thursday.
He observed that the City already has an existing education program, under which the City pays for the education of the poor but deserving residents of the City.
"We'll see if these two can be harmonized," he added.
The ordinance creating the Community College˙was approved on first reading Wednesday by the city council.
It was referred to the Committees on Education, Appropriations, and Rules and Ordinances.
Liberiaga heads the first committee, while Councilors Eduardo Pe¤aredondo and Rita Sarabia head the other committees.
Based on the proposed ordinance, the City Government will be providing funds for the operation of the school, which will also be operated by the City Government.
In line with this, the proposed measure mandates that the City provide P1 million for school year 2004-2005.
The school can also source funds from the tuition and miscellaneous fees of the students, national government aids, gifts and donations.
Exclusive for city residents
The City College is reportedly meant for City residents only - graduates of any public high school in the City, and must be able to present certificates of good moral character.
Students with incomplete school records˙will not be allowed admission.
The school will be run by officers, the functions of whom will be stated in the charter.
The City Mayor, on the other hand, will serve as the Chief Executive Officer, or President, of the school.
