Treņas mum on council's 4th call for rescission By Ronilo Ladrido Pamonag
"THEY did?"
This was Mayor Jerry Treņas' reaction after he was informed about the fourth resolution passed by the City Council Wednesday urging him anew to rescind the city's contractor with housing project contractor, Ace Builders and Enterprises (ABE).
Refusing to give a categorical answer on the City Council's call, Treņas merely said there are ongoing negotiations with ABE regarding the housing project, which the councilors believe is plagued with anomalies.
"There are talks, and once these talks are finalized, the options available to the city can then be studied upon," he said.
He admitted though that the City Government, similar to ABE, does not have the "upperhand" in the situation.
"I think there is no upperhand, lowerhand or underhand (status here). We just talk about what is good for the city," he said.
Treņas said that the city's negotiating panel, led by City Legal Officer Jose Espinosa III, is pushing for the city's interest.
"The city is pushing for the protection of our investment in that project," he said.
The mayor added that he wants the negotiations to be over "at the earliest possible time so that we can finalize what we will do."
Since October last year, the council has been calling on Treņas to rescind the contract based on the alleged substandard materials used in the project.
Councilor Vicente Gengos Jr., author of all four resolutions, said there will be no let up in the calls to rescind the contract.
"If there's no action, then it is natural that we will continue issuing calls for action," the councilor said.
The council, he said, will only stop approving such resolutions if Treņas will issue an official and categorical statement on the unanimous call to rescind the contract.
The first resolution was approved last Oct. 2; the second, last April 9; and the third last April 30.
