PB condemns Pala's ambush-slay

THE Iloilo Provincial Board (PB) has condemned the killing of broadcaster Juan "Jun" Pala of Aksyon Radyo Davao City, calling the brutal killing an assault to press freedom.
Pala is a native of Pototan, Iloilo.
In a resolution authored by PB Member Jeneda Salcedo, the PB expressed its sympathies to Pala's family and the management of Manila Broadcasting Company Aksyon Radyo.
Pala, 49, who was killed by unidentified gunmen Sunday night, is a native of Pototan, Iloilo.
Before his death, there were two attempts on his life - in 2001 and last April.
"It is usual for us to react on events we hear, see and read over the radio, on television and in the newspapers, respectively. However, some unfateful twists of event like that of the killing of an Ilonggo broadcast journalist last Sunday may have unusually shocked us. This time, the one who delivers the news is the subject of the news itself wherein he is a helpless victim," Salcedo said in a privilege during yesterday's session.
"I take this opportunity to extend my deepest sympathy to the family of the late radio commentator Juan Pala and to the whole media community. I also condemn his brutal killing and the continued lawlessness directed against members of the media," the youth leader said.
"I share with the members of the media their concern over the continued violence against them. Many lives were already lost, six of which happened this year alone," said Salcedo.
"I call then for the highest respect and value for press freedom and the rule of law," she added.
