Anilao mayor faces charges for defaming village scribe

ANILAO Mayor Joel Debuque faces oral defamation charges for reportedly shouting invectives at the secretary of Barangay Cag-an in public last Tuesday inside the town's Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.
The complainant, Lory Dagohoy, said Debuque got angry with her for assisting the Comelec personnel in the registration of new voters from their barangay Tuesday afternoon.
Dagohoy said that Debuque shouted at her saying, "Linti-an ka karon tinampa 'ta. Guha da."
She said she was taken aback by Debuque's act because she was "only helping the Comelec in facilitating the registration of some voters."
"I never interfered with Comelec's work. I was only requested to assist for quick accommodation," Dagohoy said in a radio interview.
Debuque, however, denied defaming Dagohoy although he admitted that he shouted and ordered her to come out of the Comelec office after he received complaints on her presence.
He further said that he only told Dagohoy not to interfere with the work of the Comelec officials as she was not designated to do the job.
In fact, the mayor, said he already deployed two persons to assist in the registration.
Debuque said that several people complained to him about the alleged favoritism in the listing of the new voters.
The complainants, he said, claimed that those who arrived late were actually the ones accommodated first by the Comelec personnel.
Debuque said he immediately verified the reports and when he came to the Comelec office, he saw Dagohoy inside.
