Big-time swindler nabbed By By Ruby P. Silubrico
A BIG-TIME swindler from Metro Manila was arrested Friday afternoon by police operatives inside the Midtown Hotel in Yulo St., Iloilo City.
The suspect was identified as Jose Bien Hardy Cordero, a resident of 828 San Marcelino Ermita, Manila.
Police said a resident of Iloilo City complained that the suspect embezzled from him P175,000 supposedly a downpayment for a Starex van.
He was arrested by PO1 Nick Acuesta and PO1 Randy Centena of the Traffic Command (Trafcom). Now detained at the cell of Police Precinct 1 (PP1), he will be charged for estafa.
The complainant, Carmelo Reyes, 48, of Dungon B, Jaro, said Cordero, whom he met in Manila Domestic Airport last week, introduced himself as an employee of the Department of Interior Local Government (DILG).
He told Reyes he has uncle who works at DILG who can help him purchase a vehicle. Initially, Reyes gave him P125,000.
After several days, he gave Cordero an additional P50,000.
He became suspicious though when Reyes still failed to produce the vehicle.
When he reported the incident to the police, Reyes learned that Cordero is not an employee of DILG nor he has an uncle working in the agency.
Before his arrest, Cordero opened an account with Prudential Bank in Quezon St. using a P2-million check of Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).
The bank later discovered that his BPI account has no sufficient funds.
Police said Cordero operates nationwide, including in Metro Manila and in Western Visayas.
