No intel fund hike, for now By Ronilo Ladrido Pamonag
THE ILOILO City Police Office will have to wait for next year for an increase in the intelligence fund from the City Hall.
Although Mayor Jerry Treņas is sold to the idea of increasing the intelligence fund, there will be no additional fund, at least, for this year.
"Well, maybe next year. Let's see if an increase is allowed," the mayor said.
But he noted that City Hall "cannot release an additional intelligence if the Commission on Audit does not say so."
He hinted that all that city police chief Policarpio Segubre has to do is to request for an additional intelligence fund.
Instead of using his intelligence fund, the mayor gives his annual P800,000 budget to the ICPO.
The fund is released quarterly. Police precincts also have a share in the fund.
However, Treņas admitted that the release is always delayed. Before the fund is released every quarter, they have first to seek clearance from the COA, he said.
Moreover, the mayor doused speculations that his intelligence fund is not being utilized properly.
He said that Segubre regularly updates him on how the amount is being spent.
In the wake of extortion letters and threats to the mayor and several big businesses in Iloilo City, Treņas ordered for a more intensified intelligence gathering.
