Treņas sees start of political mudslinging By Ronilo Ladrido Pamonag
FOR Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treņas, the season for mudslinging has begun, and he's the first casualty.
The mayor deplored Monday the spread of an alleged resolution by the Commission on Elections finding him guilty of an election offense.
In the wake of the 2001 elections, lawyer Cornelio Panes accused Treņas of violating election laws by coming out with a newspaper column during the election period.
This is just the start, he said, adding that it is not remote that similar incidents will take place as the elections near.
Starting last week, copies of the alleged resolution were distributed among several media outlets in the City. He noted that the resolution has not yet been promulgated by the Comelec.
"Well, what else do you call it, isn't that demolition?" he remarked.
The mayor suspects that the purported resolution is either spurious or was "stolen" from the records.
"We don't know, there isn't even a record that there was a promulgation," he said.
Treņas said he has not received any communication from the Comelec. Even Comelec Regional Director Victor Gaborne reportedly denied that the Commissioners have issued a resolution, he pointed out.
The mayor already has a suspect, but refused to divulge his identity to reporters.
When pressed for details, he merely laughed.
"The one who spread the report knows that I know who he is," he quipped.
The reason why his detractors resorted to such tactic, the mayor surmised, is that "I am really going strong."
"Maybe that is what they feel, that they can't beat me in politics, so they went to look for other ways," he remarked.
The mayor also denied that he hurriedly rushed to Manila Friday last week to check with the Comelec head office.
He said that he attended an alumni homecoming of Ateneo de Manila University. He was there until Saturday.
