Treņas-Gonzalez tandem still stands despite Ombud case

THE team up between reelectionist Mayor Jerry Treņas and Councilor Raul Gonzalez Jr. who is running for congressman, will not be shaken by the complaint of the City Council committee on good government with the Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas on the housing project.

Last week, Gonzalez, who chairs the committee, and three of his three members became the nominal complainants in the housing case that implicated Treņas mainly on the charge of gross neglect of duty.

"Well, that doesn't really matter," the mayor said.

He and Gonzalez are running under the ticket of the ruling party Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD). Former Vice Mayor Guillermo De Llana, also implicated in the scam, is Treņas' running mate.

Also included in the line up is another member of the committee -- reelectionist Councilor Erwin Plagata. He is the vice chairman of the committee.

Tentatively, the group will be filing their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) on January 2.

It has been reported that Gonzalez said Treņas is the least culpable in the scam.

The mayor declined to comment on this, saying he has not yet received any formal charge from the Ombudsman.

He reiterated though that the project was planned and started during the term of former mayor Mansueto Malabor, Gonzalez' opponent in the congressional race.

Plagata earlier commented that there is nothing political in the case.

The committee, he said, is composed by both administration and opposition councilors. He cited that even their partymates are also included in the complaint. RLP
