Of dance sports and retro parties
By Kathy Villalon Cinco

THERE is talent everywhere, all you have to do is seek it out and see its potentials.

Inspired by this thought, this writer and a bunch of friends trooped to Barangay Buntatala to witness the Buntatala High School Extension (BSHE) Dance Sports competition held last Jan. 7.

There, four pairs of high school students showed that like any dance enthusiast, they, too can carry out the swing, tango and boogie.

The program started with the introduction of the Board of Judges, comprised of Iloilo's young and pretty dance trainors, Christine Joy Jamora, Emelyn Labe and Marites Tanondong. All of them are graduates of BSHE and had beauty titles at one time.

Then, the four pairs presented their production numbers, dancing to the popular tunes of She Bangs, Otso-Otso, Mr. Suave and Spaghetti, respectively.

After that, JR Medina, one of the contestants rendered a song during the intermission number, followed by the contest proper.

The pairs were judged according to their timing, basic rhythm, movements, interpretation, footwork and technique, according to Janet L. Cabalum, school faculty.

The first placers are Amy Alonggorigan and Jose Benedict Cabalse; second place, Michael Apostol and Jansen Ruel; third place, Rose Ann Tijada and Erwin Palabrica; and fourth place, Shane Pablico and JR Medina.

The awarding was followed by a speech by the barangay captain Lovejoy Hoscilla. Isaac Gaviņo was master of ceremonies.

The competition was one of the highlights of the barangay's fiesta in honor of its patron saint, St. Joseph the Worker. The contest was organized by the BSHE Parent Teachers Association.

By the way, Jamora, the BSHE dance sports' chief judge figured in Vega Bar's latest Fabulous Friday party.

She and fellow dance trainors trooped to the ledge in their ballroom glory and grooved to the '70s and '80s beat cooked up by dj Jayvee.

That happened last January 9 and considered to be one of the greatest retro parties that we were lucky enough to witness.
